Learn to save a life, both in and out of the water. This course covers in-water lifesaving skills as well as Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED. A swimming pretest and photo ID are required on the first day. Participants will need to pass the pretest to continue with the course. Please wear comfortable clothing, bring a swimsuit, snacks and a water bottle. Towels are provided.
This is a Blended Learning class and participants will be responsible for completing an online portion before beginning the course. Prerequisites: Must be age 15 by last day of class - Must bring driver's license or photo ID for proof of age and name on the first day of class - Must attend all classes - Must pass in-water pretest to continue in course.
The in-water pretest consists of 3 skills:
Skill 1 - Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl or breaststroke and demonstrate breath control and rotary breathing. Swimming on side or back is not allowed. Goggles may be used for this portion.
Skill 2 - Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only. Hands must be placed in armpits.
Skill 3 - Complete a timed event in 1 minute and 40 seconds. Goggles are not allowed for this portion. - Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using any front stroke. - Surface dive to a depth of 7-10ft, retrieve a 10 lb object, and then return to surface. - Swim to the starting point on your back with both hands on the object, using your legs to kick. Face should be at or near the surface. Exit water without using the ladder and stand up.

This class is designed to help adults who are learning to swim or are uncomfortable in the water. We will progress at each individual’s own pace in a supportive environment so as to experience one of the most relaxing, body-friendly types of exercise. We will help you have fun in the water by using barbells, foam workout noodles, kick-boards and buoys.
The goal of this class is to continue to practice the skills of all six strokes. Graduates will be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke with good rotation, 25 yards of elementary backstroke, 15 yards of butterfly, sidestroke and breaststroke with proper technique and be comfortable in and be able to tread in deep water.

This class is designed for those who are comfortable underwater but need help swimming laps. We will develop technique and gracefulness. Freestyle will be the main focus with a lot concentration of proper breathing. Additionally, you’ll be introduced to the other variety of swim strokes such as breaststroke, backstroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke.

Fee Assistance
What is Fee Assistance?
Fee Assistance helps offset a portion of JCC program fees and is made possible through JCC Chicago funding and the generosity of donors. Fee Assistance is variable and based on need, funding availability and per person household income.
How much Fee Assistance can I expect?
The typical award averages between 0%-40% of the program fee. Additional consideration may be given based on special circumstances. Participating families are responsible for paying the remaining program cost.
Who is eligible for Fee Assistance?
Fee Assistance consideration is available for those qualifying based on financial need. All JCC Chicago customers are eligible to apply for Fee Assistance.
When should applications be submitted?
As funding is limited and based on availability, applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Only one application should be completed per applicant family, per fiscal year (July 1- June 30).
Should I register for a JCC Program if I am requesting Fee Assistance?
Program registration is required in advance of requesting Fee Assistance. A refundable program deposit of $150 for Fee Assistance applicants is due at the time of program registration. Please note: Completed Fee Assistance applications and supporting documentation must be submitted within 30 days of program registration or registration will be cancelled and any paid fee assistance deposit refunded.
What happens after a Fee Assistance application has been reviewed?
Upon award decision, the applicant will be notified of eligible assistance to be granted. Applicants have 10 business days to accept or reject the Fee Assistance award and corresponding payment plan. If Fee Assistance is declined, program registration will be cancelled and deposits refunded.
